May 6 is your lucky day. Join our bus trip to Mohegan Sun and play to win, or browse the upscale shops and restaurants, or simply take advantage of the deals on offer. On Sunday, May 6, our private bus will leave from the Library parking lot at 8:00AM and return at approximately 8:45PM. Meals are on your own and you are responsible for being on time for pickups. Registration opens at 9:30AM on Tuesday, March 13, in the meeting room. Bus seats will be assigned on a first come, first served basis, so sign up early. Cardholders may invite a guest. The trip opens to all libraries on March 27. The cost, $27.00, is payable by check to the North Bellmore Public Library and includes the bus, a tip for the driver, and the Casino bonus.

Three regional theatre veterans, comedian Les Degen, actor Mike Katz, and vocalist Sara Celina, pooled their talents to form Two Guys and a Gal. Come to your Library from 2:00—3:30PM on Sunday, March 25, for “Broadway Songs to Soothe the Soul,” their musical review of songs by great theatre collaborators such as Rogers and Hammerstein and Lerner and Lowe or great artists such as Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Bobby Darin, and Tony Bennett.

The diverse art curriculum at Grand Avenue Middle School taught by Barbara Hirten includes many areas of study: Color Theory, Design Theory, Art History, drawing, painting skills and techniques, and interpretations of painting, are all important aspects of the program which allow students to explore their creativity.

The work exhibited here from our seventh and eighth grade students is representative of these concepts and skills. Drawing from life and abstract designs based in compositional theories are fun ways for students to express themselves through Art. Be part of the first library book crawl. This is how it works...various mystery book discussions will be held throughout the week of April 16th at the North Bellmore Library and neighboring libraries (Bellmore, North Merrick and Freeport). You can attend one or all of them. Then we will meet at the Freeport Memorial Library to discuss Books Can Be Deceiving by Jenn McKinlay on Saturday April 21st at 3:30 PM. All participants will end the crawl by travelling to the famous Nautical Mile for a delicious dinner. Please register for this program at the Reference desk. The North Bellmore Public Library will offer AED/CPR training on March 6, 2012 10am-1pm. Knowing how to perform CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) on a loved one or friend stricken with cardiac arrest can double that person's chance of survival, according to the American Heart Association. An automated external defibrillator or AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm. The cost per patron is $25-please sign up at the Reference desk.

- Youth Operators - Required to Complete the Course If you wish to operate a motorboat independently and are between the ages of 10 and 18 years of age, you must hold a boating safety certificate (complete one of our courses listed). If you are less than 10 years old you may operate a motorboat (non-PWC) only if someone over 18 or someone between the ages of 10 and 18 who holds a safety certificate, is on board with you. Anyone may operate a personal watercraft if someone at least 18 years old is riding on the craft and they hold a safety certificate.
NEW YORK STATE - Personal Watercraft - Minimum Age of OperationAmended NYS law which took effect January 1, 2006 raised the minimum age of operators of PWC to fourteen (14). As of January 1, 2009, PWC Operators must be 14 years of age to operate a Personal Watercraft.

When high school teacher Caelum Quirk and his wife, Maureen, a school nurse, move to Littleton, Colorado, they both get jobs at Columbine High School. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer, yet her cells--taken without her knowledge--became one of the most important tools in medicine. The first "immortal" human cells grown in culture, they are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer and viruses; helped lead to in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions. Yet Henrietta Lacks is buried in an unmarked grave.
